Automatic Balancing Valves vs Manual Balancing Valves: Which Is Better for HVAC Hydronic Systems?

Hydronic balancing is one of the most important—and sometimes underestimated—aspects of chilled-water and hot-water HVAC design.


A hydronic system may have correctly sized pumps, pipes, coils, control valves, and terminal units, yet still perform poorly if water is not distributed according to the design flow rates. (Automatic Balancing Valves vs Manual Balancing Valves)


Typical symptoms of poor hydronic balancing include:

  • Insufficient cooling or heating at remote terminal units

  • Excessive flow through units close to the pump

  • Low chilled-water ΔT

  • Control-valve hunting

  • Excessive differential pressure

  • Valve and pipe noise

  • Higher pumping energy

  • Poor temperature control

  • Difficulty commissioning the system


Balancing valves are therefore installed to ensure that each branch, riser, AHU, FCU, or other terminal unit receives approximately the water flow required by the HVAC design.


Two common approaches are:

  1. Manual Balancing Valves — MBVs

  2. Automatic Balancing Valves — ABVs


Although both aim to achieve hydraulic balance, they behave very differently when system pressure changes.
