Chilled-Water Pipe Insulation: Types, Applications, Advantages and Disadvantages

Chilled-water piping is a critical part of central air-conditioning systems. It transports cold water—commonly between chillers, pumps, air-handling units, fan-coil units and heat exchangers. Because the water temperature is normally much lower than the surrounding air temperature, uninsulated or incorrectly insulated pipes can experience substantial heat gain and surface condensation.

A successful chilled-water insulation system must do more than simply cover the pipe. It must provide continuous thermal insulation, effective vapour control, properly insulated supports, sealed joints and suitable protection against mechanical damage and weather exposure.


Why Chilled-Water Pipes Need Insulation

Chilled-water pipe insulation performs several important functions:

  • Reduces heat gain from the surrounding environment.

  • Maintains the required chilled-water supply temperature.

  • Prevents condensation on pipe surfaces.

  • Reduces cooling-energy consumption.

  • Protects ceilings, walls and equipment from water damage.

  • Protects personnel from contact with cold surfaces.

  • Improves the overall efficiency of the HVAC system.


In hot and humid climates, condensation control is usually the most critical consideration. Even small gaps in insulation or vapour barriers can allow humid air to reach the cold pipe surface, resulting in concealed condensation and corrosion.

1. Closed-Cell Elastomeric Rubber Insulation

Closed-cell elastomeric insulation is a flexible foam material commonly manufactured from nitrile rubber, EPDM or similar synthetic elastomers. It is available as preformed tubes, sheets and rolls.
