In HVAC design, reducing noise is relatively easy. Reducing noise without creating an excessive pressure penalty is where good engineering begins.
A sound attenuator—also called a duct silencer, acoustic attenuator, or sound trap—can substantially reduce fan and airflow noise transmitted through ductwork. However, an incorrectly selected attenuator can introduce significant resistance, increase fan static pressure, raise electrical consumption, generate additional aerodynamic noise, and even compromise the required airflow.
The objective is therefore not to select the attenuator with the highest acoustic rating. It is to find the best balance between:
Required insertion loss + acceptable regenerated noise + minimum pressure drop + practical size
