Air filters are small components compared with AHUs, FCUs, package units, and duct systems, but their effect on HVAC performance is very large. A clean filter protects the cooling coil, fan, ductwork, and indoor air quality. A dirty filter, however, becomes an airflow restriction.
When filters are not cleaned or replaced on time, the HVAC system may still run, but it will no longer operate at its designed condition. Airflow reduces, fan pressure increases, cooling capacity drops, energy consumption changes, and comfort complaints begin.
