In an Air Handling Unit (AHU), the cooling coil removes both sensible and latent heat from the air. During this process, moisture in the air condenses on the coil surface and falls into the drain pan. From there, condensate must be collected, drained, trapped, and discharged safely.
A poorly designed AHU drain-pan system can cause serious operational problems, including:
Water carryover into ductwork
Leakage inside plantrooms or ceiling spaces
Corrosion of AHU casing and coil frames
Microbial growth and bad odor
False ceiling damage
Fan section water accumulation
Negative pressure preventing drainage
Overflow during high humidity operation
Drain-pan design may look simple, but it is one of the most common causes of AHU maintenance complaints.
